This poem reminds me of the late 90’s early 2000’s years. This was a time when I was always outside, having fun and exploring different things. I would look at worms and ride skateboard, and hurt myself. I know this poem refers to a small child because it says that it was a time when Unicorns still existed. The chestnuts are probably brown large chestnuts. Also it reminds me of these years I live and future years. In the parenthesis the writer talks about how older kids or adults put their cigarette tobacco in the chestnuts and put a straw in to smoke it. I think they were talking about a horse chestnut pipe. The quote, “We puffed in green lizard silence” tell us how they had smoked, in green lizard silence. Green lizard silence is a metaphor modifying how silent they puffed. The kids are high above the earth on tree limbs that it seems and civilization cannot contact while they puff. The influence of civilization cannot reach them. On the last lines they are saying that the summer may have never happened, but as time goes on it gets more and more real to them. If it was real that summer watermelons ruled. This reminds me of the last summer where I was disconnected from everyone from Georgia for over a month. I had to make friends and adapt to the Canadian culture in my neighborhood. It seemed as if Southern culture could not touch me in Canada. The only difference between my summer and this poem was that patties ruled.

Flouride

In 1901 a young dentist named Fredrick S McKay came to the town of Colorado springs to open a dental practice. He was astonished at what he found. People had hideous teeth, but their teeth were protected from decay. Years later the supposed ” protector” was none other than Fluoride, and for years to come Fluoride has been added to water and toothpaste. Some people strongly disapprove of the practice of adding Fluoride to drinking water. There have been reported cases of toxicity, carcenogenity, and theories of bone fractures related to people who intake irregular amounts of Fluoride. Thus far, I have not seen any changes in my appearance or physical ability. I feel that Fluoride has no potential danger to healthy people, such as myself. Before people could use Fluoride so freely we needed to test its safety and make sure it worked. The FDA approves of all Fluoride levels in our toothpastes and mouthwash. They regulate how much Fluoride is added to these items so we can have just enough to protect our teeth and not over use it. This is also why I am comforted by the fact that Fluoride is added to our water. The side effect of Fluoride in drinking water that scares me the most is the bone fracture diseases I can get from consuming too much Fluoride. This is called Skeletal Fluorosis. Skeletal Fluorosis, especially in its early stages, is a difficult disease to diagnose, and can be confused with various forms of Arthritis. In the early stage of Skeletal Fluorosis, symptoms include pain in the bones and joints, sensations of burning, pricking, and tingling in the limbs. Also muscle weakness, chronic fatigue, and reduced appetite are prevalent in the subject. During this phase, changes in the pelvis and spine can be detected on x-rays. In the second stage, pains in the bones become constant and some of the ligaments begin to harden. Osteoporosis may form in the long bones. Bony spurs may also appear on the limb bones, especially around the knee, the elbow, and on the surface of tibia. In later stages of Skeletal Fluorosis, called crippling Skeletal Fluorosis, the bones become weak and moving the joints is difficult. Other bones partially fuse together, crippling the patient. Aside from the firghtening and sometimes alarming reports of symptoms associated with Floride use, I stil feel confident that the level of Fluoride in our daily are safe
